This is a beautiful version of the story. My daughter cannot stop mentioning it. The illustrations are wonderful, full of details that one notices only after reading the book several times - that way the book has more to offer upon reading it repeatedly.

The tale of Hansel and Gretel is hundreds of years old and has been told time and time again. Rika Lesser's retelling, however, strives to be a true as possible to the tale as it was first published by the Brothers Grimm. Beware that this version of the story is darker than more modern, Disney-fied versions: the mother, wanting more food for herself, abandons her children in the forest. When they return, she angrily takes them back into the forest and leaves them when they're sleeping. Then of course there's the whole debacle with the children-eating witch and Gretel cooking her alive in the oven, a portion of the story that, for all it macabre violence, hasn't actually changed much over the centuries. But at the end when the children return home, their mother has "died" inexplicably, and it may just be me, but it seems likely that the father, outraged with his wife's attitude towards her children, has done her in.This is Hansel and Gretel in all its glory, with folksy, well-done illustrations by the esteemed Paul O. Zelinksy. I wish there were a bit more detail in the illustrations, but it seems Zelinksy strove to capture the rustic feel evoked by the text.My one criticism is that the story is rather long, but this is likely due to its loyalty to the original. In the final analysis, this is one of the much better - if not best - tellings of Hansel and Gretel on today's market.

I just want to say that this book ha no pictures inside, just large print. I bought it for my 3.5 year old but it's appropriate for a 7 year old who is learning to read.

As a 5 and 6 year old, I recall reading this stark version of the fairy-tale. The illustrations here are simply beautiful! I remember talking to my mom about the issues in this tale -- famine and starvation, abandonment, cannibalism, supporting, being supported by your sibling, and returning/reunited to your family after being through everything.My mom helped me understand the mom's behaviour in this story, and I hope I can do that for my son some day. Like all fairy tales, this simply looks at some of the worst that could happen, and lets you see a way out. I read it without these gorgeous illustrations too. You can't disney all of life, though I admit, I'm a sentimental soft-hearted person who cries when the cats get rained on when I'm watching the Aristocats :-) Enjoy, and think too ...

for a very young child too young for my 8 yr old, large writing. However there are big confusing words. Not a good book

An extremely well written book. Rich content in an easily assimilated style. A must for anyone enquiring into the history of the Mediterranean region.

A comprehensive, pan-regional study of the particular characteristics that contribute to our collective understanding of what is "the Mediterranean", this tome is Braudel for the twenty-first century, and will remain an essential starting point for any serious discussion about Mediterranean history for years to come. In essence, Drawing on a vast range of historical sources and some archaeological material, Horden and Purcell argue that the Mediterranean is (and always has been) a complex mosaic of useful microregional niches, each of which can be usefully exploited by local populations in order to offset the shortcomings of other, nearby niches. Perhaps the main weakness of the book is that there is no meaningful incorporation of palaeoecological data to add scientific heft to these arguments, as most people will agree that historical records can be problematic for a variety of reasons.This tome is one for which the adjective "magisterial" was coined; the authors seem to be very much aware of this, as some of the prose can seem pompous and unnecessarily abstruse, peppered liberally with quotations from other languages which Horden and Purcell have not bothered to translate for the mere peasants reading their book. Quibbles aside, this book is the very definition of 'essential reading'.

Mediterranean microecological connectivityI like reading history. I enjoy with it. I am not a professional historian. In the last few years I have tried and read books offering a broad scope and general overviews of history such as this one.In this work, the authors intend to study Mediterranean history as a whole, the history of the region. For them, the Mediterranean is only loosely defined, distinguishable from its neighbours to degrees that vary with time, geographical direction and topic. Its boundaries are not the sort to be drawn easily on a map. Its continuities are best thought of continuities of form or pattern, within which all is mutability.In that sense, the distinctiveness of Mediterranean history results (they propose) from the paradoxical coexistence of a milieu of relatively easy seaborne communications with a quite unusually fragmented topography of microregions in the sea's coastlands and islands. The different chapters of the book are aimed to impressionistically show some of the prime ingredients in the normal variability and connectivity of Mediterranean microregions: the shifting along a spectrum of possibilities; the fluctuating relations between pastoralism and agriculture; the manipulative state with its taxes and symbols; the mobility of people both voluntarily -economic migration- and compulsory -military service- (not necessarily very distinct); a history of Mediterranean redistribution as inseparable from that of the people (who are often profoundly mobile) who produce, store, process, transport and consume.The authors also warn that several central topics have been reserved for a Volume 2 to come in the future: climate, disease, demography and the relations between the Mediterranean and other major areas of the globe.I have rated it four starts. Considering its content, I think it should be five; considering its readability, three (sometimes falling to two, sometimes raising to four).Other books of "global history" I would recommend to read are "The Rise of the West" by William H. McNeill, "World History. A new perspective" by Clive Ponting, "The Great Divergence", by Kenneth Pomeranz, "The Dynamics of Global Dominance. European Overseas Empires 1415-1980", by David Abernethy and "The History of Government", by S.E. Finer.

Horden and Purcell have produced in The Corrupting Sea a comprehensive overview of the ancient Mediterranean world in the annaliste tradition of Braudel's Mediterranee et le monde mediterraneen a l'epoque de Philippe II. A historian of medicine (Horden) and a classicist (Purcell), the authors develop the thesis that one must examine the microenvironments of the Mediterranean in order to understand the broad trends of the region's culture and history.This work is a must read for everyone who is interested in the Mediterranean --classicists and medievalists in particular. Every public library in the world would be well advised to purchase a copy. In addition to the narrative that is replete with extensive commentary, the volume has a very useful set of bibliographical essays as well as the normal scholarly apparatus.

This book is very learned; the authors have read very much. But their style makes the work hard to follow, and much space is devoted to criticizing dubious views rather than advancing the debate.

I know quite a bit capturing and manipulating network traffic, but I never really learned how to do interception via mechanisms like ARP poisoning, etc-- this book has succinct coverage of many such techniques. It covers interception across all major platforms (Windows, Mac, Linux) and introduces the open-source Canape interception toolkit which makes many tasks simple. Beyond the "how" of using tools, the book covers practical techniques for exploring and exploiting network protocols in the real world.Getting the pacing/depth right for a broad technical book like this one is challenging, but I think this book really hits the sweet spot-- it is detailed enough to point in interesting directions and get the reader started with tools and techniques without burying them under an overwhelming level of detail.Highly recommended.

Bought as a gift for my cyber-leaning son.

Top heavy on theory and the application aspect lacks. Labs are preferred.

James Forshaw did a good on explaining the inner workings of network protocols, cipher methods used to provide security and integrity to the information, some methods to debug apps and a ton of methods to exploit them.

Great book

Forshaw gives us a succinct and detailed explanation of white hat or black hat techniques to analyse and do more with network traffic. At the simplest level might be the descriptions of how to get ("capture") packets and then to send these at a later time against their destination. This is the classic replay scenario that has been with us since the dawn of the Internet. The text shows how to take the next obvious step, where instead of simply replaying the packets you first alter them in some benign (?) or nefarious (?) manner.Of necessity you need some knowledge of cryptosystems. But Forshaw spares you the hard math. Instead AES, block ciphers et al are quickly and accurately run through at the systems level. A deeper dive is via Bruce Schneier's Applied Cryptography, which you might want to also have as a backup to this book.Attach methods like SQL injection are covered. Any reader working with databases should read this section slowly and carefully. Still a very common reputed attack vector.

This is a great book for anyone who wants to know the inner workings of networking, and how to manipulate protocols/services. Its a short book but does a great job quickly explaining how things work. To get the most out of the book you need to have a basic understanding of networking, C++, C#, Python, Lua, x86, and there were a couple examples that used D and Java. Having that said i believe even a beginner could read this book if they lived by it and used each chapter as a spring board into further studies. This book is now in my top 10 tech books.
